It’s been awhile since I’ve posted here and here’s why. I started another company, Get Off The Couch Potato Sports Productions, LLC. Couch Potato produces sports events that will always have a charitable component attached to each event. Our first event was produced last year, the Central Coast Cancer Challenge. We raised $12,000 for two local cancer charities and we hope to raise more in 2011.

Cancer has touched my life profoundly in the last two years. My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 (she is doing well) and recently, I lost a friend to lung cancer. I also know many more people who have lost loved ones to the disease. I have a personal reason to continue to help those who are battling this disease.

I have decided to walk a half marathon with Team In Training. I completed the Honolulu Marathon in 2006 with the help of TNT and I am happy to report that my honored teammate, Ellie Nunley, a 3-year old at the time battling Leukemia, is now a happy, healthy 7-year old.

People tell me fundraising is hard. No, what’s hard is watching your loved one have to endure chemotherapy, losing their hair, having surgery and not feeling well. Central Coast Cancer Challenge

It has been an interesting few months. In September, my business partner Samantha Pruitt and I (Get Off the Couch Potato Sports Productions) produced the first Central Coast Cancer Challenge. It was a fantastic event with more than 400 + participants. The event raised $12,000 for cancer support services in San Luis Obispo County. We’re in the midst of planning the second event…more to come. I’ll be posting some work shortly. Plus, Couch Potato will have another exciting announcement soon.

Great Leadership Experience

Hertha and Paprika

I had one of the best, most insightful leadership workshop experiences of my life this Wednesday. My friend and Fabulous Women’s Networking colleague Hetha Wolff-Arend, a Life Coach, lead a workshop on leadership and emotional intellegence with the help of Paprika, a beautiful Mustang.

Now Paprika is a flight animal. Their is no judgement or conflict in her personality. But she is a smart cookie. She connects to a person emotionally. We were asked to lead Paprika around and see if she would actually follow us. This required us to bring some type of bond and connection to Paprika. But, you had to be confident, assertive (not aggressive), happy (not down or angry) and with a light step.

Paprika stopped a few times when I was leading and I had to stop too. I had to discribe how I was feeling and then make the connection again with the horse. I learned more from that one hour exercise of how I communicate with people that was eye opening, humbling and so valuable. I loved that horse!! That horse ripped me right open without criticism or judgement.

I am such an advocate of this type of teaching, there is plenty to be learned from my four-legged friend. Hertha is an excellent teacher. She questions your feelings, approach and offers solutions. I highly recommend this workshop/seminar to anyone who owns a business, is managing employees and even employees to learn to be better at relationships with fellow employees and customers.

It’s funny, sassy and fun. Next up, the new Snickers Diva commercial which is just as good, if not better than the Betty White commercial.

Are you a Couch Potato?

I don’t know about other entrepreneurs in San Luis Obispo, or for that matter anywhere, but I seem to have 2 to 3 new business ideas or companies that I want to start. And actually, I have started another company, Get Off The Couch, Potato Sports Productions. It is a sports marketing and management company. I started this with a partner, Samantha Pruitt and we are in the midst of organizing a big event in San Luis Obispo. I will announce that event in the next couple of weeks. I am very busy and having tons of fun. I have always had a passion for sports, so what better to do than to marry your passion with your profession. More to come!
